The battle is often won or lost before it is fought.

—Nolan Dalla, WSOP Media Director

Nolan Dalla’s quotation summarizes this chapter’s primary principle. Poker is a battle, and poker players and good generals apply essentially the same principles

First and most important, you don’t want a fair fight. You want the largest possible edge, and preparation is the easiest way to get it. Colonel Hackworth, one of America’s most decorated soldiers, put it this way, “If you find yourself in a fair fight, you didn’t plan your mission properly.”

Information is the primary poker weapon, and you should acquire it before you need it. Many losers don’t prepare thoroughly, and some don’t prepare at all. They just sit down and play. Playing is fun, but preparation is often tedious and time-consuming work.

This chapter is long for two reasons:

· You must take many preparation steps.

· You may not understand the importance of preparation or the number of essential preparation steps.

Many talented players lose or break even because they don’t do enough of these ten types of preparation:

1. Developing their knowledge and skills

2. Staying healthy

3. Preparing for specific events

4. Selecting the best game

5. Selecting the best seat

6. Preparing at the table before playing

7. Preparing to play each and every hand

8. Preparing for future hands

9. Preparing for future sessions

10. Preparing for their long-term development
